How we evaluate website builders

Our methodology is buyer-first: we score a platform against the job the website needs to do, not against the longest generic feature list. A builder can be excellent overall and still be the wrong recommendation for a particular workflow.

1. Define the conversion job

We identify the valuable visitor action—such as an inquiry, booking, purchase, subscription or portfolio review—and evaluate whether the platform supports that path with manageable friction.

2. Setup and AI workflow

AI is useful when it reduces blank-page work while leaving an editable, maintainable result. We look for sensible structure generation, practical editing control and the ability to replace generic output with real positioning and proof.

3. Maintenance

Routine jobs should remain understandable after launch: changing navigation, adding a service, updating an event, editing a form or publishing a new campaign page. Ongoing friction is treated as a real cost.

4. Business and commerce depth

We consider forms, bookings, CRM, payments, inventory, subscriptions, email capture, analytics and relevant integrations. More capability is not automatically better if it creates complexity the user will never need.

5. Design and mobile control

We review layout flexibility, design consistency, media handling and mobile presentation. Some users benefit from strong guardrails; others need free-form control. The recommendation depends on the project.

6. SEO fundamentals

We prioritize editable titles and descriptions, clean URLs, heading control, internal linking, crawlable content and mobile performance. A platform’s SEO feature list is not treated as a guarantee of rankings.

7. Growth path and evidence

We consider likely requirements over the next one or two years and use current provider documentation for material capability claims where possible. Search-demand data can determine which comparisons deserve dedicated pages, but it does not determine the recommendation itself.

Affiliate independence and limitations

Affiliate relationships do not determine rankings. Product features can change faster than editorial pages, and no test can reproduce every user’s workflow. When a particular integration, compliance requirement or plan limit is essential, verify it directly with the provider before purchase.
